I "believe" they did this because of some of the mechanics they have or want to implement. Thieves come to mind off the top of my head. And although I really, REALLY enjoyed Darkfall's 3rd person in melee I know i'm probably the minority. It's not a deal breaker. Immersion breaker? not really in my eyes. If anything It adds a bit of realism to me atleast. Although I would absoulutly love to be able to look over my shoulder if I'm jogging along down the road.

first person view is the best persons view.
웃 This game is my home, thus you are my guest. So behave like one.

I prefer 3rd person view aswell. But thats just because I like to look in awe at the new equpement I just got.
As I mentioned in an earlier thread Im a vanity player.
I wish theyd do this in 3rd person but its not a deal breaker for me...Yet.
Guess Ill wait and see how they implement it.

Everything the Forsaken Studios devs have said indicates the game will be first person view only, with this falling under a similar category as full-loot and open PvP: not negotiable.
I always used to be a 3rd person gamer, with the Warcraft series (RTS & MMO), Age of Empires, various other games and RPGS, etc. It was one of the huge reservations I had about starting to play MO, in fact. But once I got used to how to move my character around, it was actually pretty damn cool. I didn't miss 3rd person at all, most of the time (seeing what my guy looked like would have be nice, but eh). Both first and third person have different annoying characteristics that pop up when playing with them, which I'll call a moot point. But the thing is, you can't design a PvP game around both. Either works fine, but one will have a massive advantage over the other, typically 3rd person since you can anticipate attacks from behind and the side much, much more easily. End conclusion: I (and many others) are perfectly fine with Embers being developed as first person view only, though I'd play no matter what the view perspective was.

I would prefer a really close up 3rd person view. Like the example below from Witcher 2

It's close enough to add the element of surprise if someone sneaks up behind you, even though you will probably notice something just as you are attacked, but that is most likely to happen in RL also unless it's a ninja in the dark. And the combat can be designed in a way where your attack direction is controlled, which is impossible in really zoomed out games like WoW. But still you get a better perception as a player and you do get more immersion imho, I did not really connect in Mortal, it felt unresponsive and the lack of perception was really annoying, like having to run sideways to look around. I will probably play this game anyway if its other promises are kept, but I would prefer a closely zoomed in third person to first person.

Stick to your guns Forsaken, first person view is best for this game.

There's a reason one is called first person and the other *third* person.
