ye, the market isnt THAT big, it might grow bigger throu time, but the numbers mentioned are abit out of proportion.
You have to remember that EoC will be a niche game, alot of things like full loot, no hand holding, no clases and quests(well the "kill 100 pigs, quests anyway) might be some of the best things a game can have, BUT we are the minority here, theres alot of people who would hate, what most of the people here loves.
So ye, 10-100 thousand over time might be possible(probaly going too be decided by, how much of the features the devs wants in, that makes it and how buggy the release will be) after all first impressions are everything(just look at Mo)
if i where to guess i would say around 10-20 thousand at release, most likely dropping to 15-18thousand or something after the initial hype wears off in the following 2 months, and then if its a succes they will pull a "eve" and slowly gain momentum and players

I have some trouble believing that most of those 44k sq km will be anything more than generic topographical variations. I mean how long would it take to craft a world of this size one rock and one tree at a time? Maybe some key areas will be unique and interesting but peripheral areas will probably be as interesting as a pile of cardboard boxes.

Well, they have said they have some good world building software of some sort or another which lays down the basics, then they go over all of it by hand. So, yes, it will have a personal touch, or at least look good out in the middle of nowhere.
Edit: Also, most of that is water.

point still stands, it all comes from(atleast thats what i think) all the info from the devs which generater both stuff to talk about and hype. More so by the time EoC launches it will have a fair deal of competition, yes it is unique, but there is going to be some competition from games like eve and Mo(if it makes it, and doesnt shut down), not to mention darkfall 2.0(althou i hope that game crashes and burns, cant stand AV) also xsyon(same as Mo, if it makes it so far)
edit: forgot to mention ccpīs WoD, which might be coming out near that time
