Thread: Sleeping

    Sleeping

It's what i suspect is a little known fact that sleeping will be in Embers of Caerus, and that disturbing it will be a viable tactic; e.g waking your opponents up continuously during a siege so they're weaker and have poorer reaction time then otherwise. *Flips table in frustration at the forum search engine :L. You'll have to find the quote. ) Now, i had a long, labrynthian thread prepared, but as i've lost it, it boils down to dreams and visions where the player has control over his character but the world can change at a moments notice, affected to some degree by what has happened to you recently. You might dream up a unnerving town which you've been in that day, for example, and decide to go and smith the sword of your dreams. However, you would still gain skill points for what you do in the dream, be it defending yourself from a monster of your own making to practicing magic, though of course the rules and actual effectiveness of what you're doing depends on your own knowledge.

The game would begin with a host of visions that had a very, very small chance of happening to a player, which is increased in likelihood slightly by exposure to magic and of course wielding it. Disciples could potentially have "divine" communion with their god, as well as non disciple or religious players at a much, much higher rarity. Magi would only get such under certain circumstances, but I'll get to that later. There would also be the chance for "prophetic" visions to occur, based on potential futures and -and now is where it gets interesting- the province of the DET, or dynamic event team. Basically dreams would be their playpark, and could be crafted by them and made to happen to certain players as they determined it, including "godly" communion and visions of all shapes and sizes. Magi's and disciples could influence dreams and possibly make bits of them at least a reality. Perhaps you've captured a gods attention, or he or she or they have no other choice but to trust in you. They might just be telling you exactly how much you've pissed them off. Done one too many rituals lately? I don't envy your dreams. Sampled a rather inventive and degenerative cocktail? Lets see what happens when you trip.

If it could be done, no one would care about the, say, 20 to half hour you might sleep every day (once again, you'll have to find the day/night cycle thread :L)? Maybe through pocedural generation, not loaded by the rest of the server unless a Magi decides to go do a little inception? I would love to see this, and i know you already likely have plans to prevent it being staring at a blank screen for a while :L. Please give me all your thoughts on the subject. !

Wow, just an amazing idea. I'm all up for it!
It would really depend on if the DET has enough time for that and are not already totally busy.
But I think we will see more about that in the next couple of days when they tell us more in the Dev Diaries Looking forward to it.

Very interesting ideas, I'd be happy with any sort of dreams/visions while sleeping. And I agree that there needs to be required sleeping at least a few minutes a day to stay at the top of your game.

Yes, definitely. And I wouldn't want to stare at a black (or white) screen for 20 minutes or so a day...

When playing Cthulhu, I had a game master who regularly used dreams as a means to give certain players hints or make the whole group go mad, one after the other. Went as far as characters refusing to sleep until they finally passed out - and then nothing happened that night

Great medium for this kind of story element. Wonder if it'd be feasible.

Something to do while your character sleeps? Yes, please. Vacuuming, doing laundry, working, ... oh, while IN the game you said!

Nevertheless I don't want to have to sleep for a too long time, althought the idea of dreams is great.
Iīm sorry, English isnīt my first language, Iīll try as best as I can and if you canīt stand it, donīt read it.
    Thanks

Maybe something like sleep in Skyrim? When you become well rested, your skills will go up a little faster. This would also work after getting killed and getting temporary skill loss.

Interesting. I like the dream idea. The different dreams can all depend on skills and attributes you have. Also take in account your ancestry, current location, what God you follow, your karma. Really the list could go on and on.

10-20 minutes is a reasonable amount of time. It would be neat to watch what dreams could unfold.

wait, I thought the devs HINTED [ie NOT confirmed, so don't quote me] that sleep would probably happen when you are logged off. Or is my memory just bad.

    This would make sense.
