For my first post, I thought I'd make it about something dear to me.
In every RPG I've played, be it electronic or paper, I have endeavored to gain knowledge. I love lore, as I'm sure a lot of you do. Knowledge can be powerful, depending on who has it and how they use it. I'm not just talking about arcane knowledge either, though that can be pretty powerful as well, especially in the wrong hands. I guess my question is, will knowledge have an impact on the game? If I spend my time searching out tidbits of information, be they recent or ancient, will it have an impact? Or will I just "know stuff" others don't. I understand that using knowledge is the easiest way to prove it will effect something, but will there be any use for lore other than saying "Huh, that was interesting."
It is my hope I will be able to play a scholarly character, though if I'm traveling the world in search of it, I'm sure I'll need some kind of combat skills. I just hope it'll be worth it.
Though as I read the post again to myself, I realize the mootness of my point. The internet will house all the lore in the game soon after it is learned. But still I'd like to know.

The Internet will only give up as much information as people divulge. I don't plan on sharing my secrets for free. I plan to trade knowledge as a commodity, wether it be just something interesting or something that leads to power.

any knowledge worth knowing will be up for grabs on the interwebs.
any knowledge about power balances and things like that will likely come from insiders, and will spread fast. knowing it first will give an advantage, but you can not expect to be a "scholar" in a game and just happen to know all the important bits and be able to sell them.
at least, thats my 2 cents

Of course there will be a lot of information and misinformation out there on the web. I didn't say I could control or have an impact on that information. I didn't even say I would know all the secrets, even though that is always the goal of an information trafficker. I just said the secrets I know I won't be posting freely on a web page someplace and that I will try to make that information as profitable to myself or the group I'm in as possible. I'm not talking about how to play the game, but where a secret temple is, or a sunken ship, or how to cast a powerful spell. I think by posting all the neat things you know about the game ruins a bit of the fun of discovery for other people. Not to say that a play group shouldn't work together as long as the entire game isn't your play group. Keep a few secrets for yourself. It's fun to know things that it might take 2 or 3 years in real life for someone else to discover.
