I would actually prefer if they spread some misinformation about magic and gods on purpose. A lot of competing theories to feed the religious wars, that sort of thing. I kinda want to see at least one order of knights dedicated to killing every single god out there ("They are demons from shadows beyond this world, feeding on our souls! We must kill them all!"). Same with magic; some say it's the most natural thing in the world, others say that using magic will unravel the fabric of reality itself...

Personally I would like both utilitarian magic and combat magic, if there are going to be risks then let me have a way to fight back with something to go with it.
They haven't put out a lot of info on it, but what they have suggests that there is not a straight up "fireball" type combat magic system, but rather a system where a clever player can turn magic into a weapon if they're creative. My only point with the Lord of the Rings reference was to demonstrate a rather utilitarian spell (making light) and turning it into something with combat functionality (using the light to blind the enemy during a cavalry charge). People are obviously free to speculate however they want, but there is little point to speculating on something that is almost certainly not in the game (like straight up combat magic).

Sooo like in star wars? Where they use a pushing spell to choke peeps to death? And a pulling spell to pull them into their lightsaber? And a throwing spell to throw objects into peeps?

+1 anyway. I would love to blind random peeps and stab em through the throat with my dirk. Or lighting a fire with magic on a cold, windy, rainy night.

I would like it if there was a way to cast shields that lasted for a day or so and be able to caste as many as you want. Then on your interface you could see the status of how well your shield is taking damage. Also have it so casting the shield takes a while so it makes it so all Magi are prepared before battle rather than just on the spot or even before they venture out of their home they would cast a bunch of spells on themselves.

And if you have too many shields on you, you start hearing noises from outside reality. Then using more magic has a chance to tear reality and things get in and eat you. Nom.

it seems a bit too linear. if there were random effects that may or may not hurt you it would be a much more interesting system. will fifty shields kill me on the spot or just summon a plague to wipe out all the local animals and make every single other player in the area hate me?

Eh? That was general comment/suggestion, not a detailed formula about what I think should happen.
I would expect side effects to depend on which threads you were messing with. Hmmm.
Depending on how interaction with the threads works, I guess you would need to overuse either life or death threads for an insta kill type backlash. Whereas a plague would either be a death or life backlash. Strange beasties from the dungeon dimensions is speculation, as I have no idea whether they exist in the cosmology.

Oh and people hate you regardless of whether you cause bad stuff to happen. Bad magic user person.

are you tallking about players or npcs? Becuase most players would take the best advantage they can get? This way theyd be forced to hate magi.

fine, it should still be slightly randomised to make it more interesting.

It would be interesting if different schools of magic are on each continent. This will give a conceptual aspect to cultural differences on magic development and give a big reason for magi to travel to learn from a different school of magic.

I did say chance, that means randomised in my dictionary.
