    Magic system

Well since there is a preview of a few systems up and running, I thought it would be a good idea on sharing some information on the planned magic system. We hope the magic in our game will be both challenging and involving without resorting to 'button mashing' and we are taking every step neccesary to make it as unique as we can. I'm not at the liberty to disclose anything specific but let me assure you that magic will be alot more then just opening a book and choose your spell from an allready available list.

Now on to the systems themselves:

To start with there are three magic systems in planning stages at the moment. Two of those magic systems are 'core' and the third one is an addition to that 'core' magic system. Ofcourse you will not be forced in having to skillup two magic systems if you don't want to. You can get along fine with only one of the 'core' systems. On another note, the 'core' systems lock eachother out. So you can only have one or the other.

The magic for our game will be semi realistic and is very well thought out. We try to incorporate real physics in it where we can. Obviously thats not always possible but then we just try to find a good lore based reason why it does work this way in our world.

We are at the moment working on the spell list wich is heavily influenced by the following games, both tabletops and digital, and books: UO, AD&D, Soulcaliber, Warhammer RPG, The Elenium (David Eddings), etc.

On a last teasing note: Exploring the world is interesting for those wishing to learn about the third magic system. :P

    Kind regards,

I have a quick but important question considering this. Will there be simple spells that even non-wizard types can cast? Examples being like night vision (very important if you have a day and night cycle and for dungeoneering) or telekinesis (just plain fun to have ). If not, it can easily be implemented by an alchemy system (like in the Witcher) but I'm just curious if hybrids will be possible.

    Like the Oblivion's scrolls spell?

How are mages supposed to fare in PvP? Are they a powerfull and intimidating class that other players should fear or ar they going to be more used in support roles?

Or is the difference between "core1" and "core2" precisely that?

    Re: Magic system

Even if you aren't a wizard type, you could still put some points into the core magic system to cast spells. Although you will be alot less effective than the ones at max skill, naturally. The differences between the two core systems has nothing to do with pvp nor with pve. More on the specifics of those systems will be revealed at a later date.

On the pvp part, magic users will be a formidable force in any battle. But its easy for them to overcommit and get some nasty drawbacks from that. Can't go into specifics of this as of yet, but being a caster will have its own personal set of dangers associated with it. The thing to fear in PvP is skilled players that know how to play their roles in any situation, and I'm not talking about casters alone in this. It will be possible for casters to go either way. If they wish they can be pure support or pure dps, or any mix inbetween. Its all up to the playstyle of the caster.

If you are looking to be a caster type player, you better pay attention to the lore of the game and do some extensive research once the game is released...

There is an Alchemy skill planned at this point, but its got little to do with magic. Therefore I'm not going to talk about that system just yet.

    Re: Magic system

You also need to bear in mind that this isn't going to be a PvP centric game, therefore while a lot of magic could have some interesting uses in PvP, we aren't just making a list of ways to kill people with magic. The game is a sandbox, and part of that sandbox happens to be the ability to fight, and kill, anyone anywhere... but there will be repercussions, and this isn't the main intended playstyle, therefore a lot of the magic planned for the game is planned for more than just PvP.

I guess the question to ask back to the community would be, if you were actually a mage/wizard in real life, you wouldn't want to go around killing everyone, so instead what would you want/expect to be able to use your magical powers for?

I was thinking of multipurpose spells, things that you can use for either good or evil. You know, guns don't kill people

I was thinking for example of being able to cast a fireball. This can either be used to light a campfire or burn someone down for example. Also a "light bearer" that you could use to enlighten a dark cave or to blind your enemy. Power over the elements is always a nice thing that can be either used for good (command water to put out a fire) or evil (drown your enemies).

So basically things that could be usefull in a small scale but if you are a powerfull mage and bring them to full power.... thats gonna be someone you don't want to mess with.

But I don't really know if what I'm talking about is possible. In MO we can command water and fire but we can't start or put out a fire with it, we can just throw the stuff at other people.
