Hi all fellow followers of Embers of Caerus, i bring to you an question that i feel is very important for both immersion and skill-based combat. I hope that in Embers of Caerus if you can pull it off and meet certain prerequisites you should be able to achieve one-hit kills, and not just on NPC's. Say, if you shoot an arrow through the eye of an unwarded opponent, or attack someone who clearly has no way of surviving the attack, e.g if you hit someone wearing roughspun cloth with a blow that will decapitate them successfully.
One of the advantages of this is that it brings a more level playing field between any skillful player without much in the way of weaponry or armour and less skilled players with better gear. They may still have the advantage, but equally if you are extremely good it opens the opportunity for fights like this.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBaeSq_R38Q (Alright, you may not be be able to include that level of athleticism but i can dream can't i?).
I have read the counter argument that it prevents players from venturing out in more ordinary garb, but surely you can only blame the player if they carry no means of protection, and if you're insistent on the idea bodyguards? I know its better then shooting someones head full of arrows which penetrate through their skull yet they don't die despite having no magical protection whatsoever, such as is occasionally the case in Skyrim. Thoughts?

One-hit kills

A one hit kill is always a bit too much, 2-3 hit kills are fine. Maybe you could 1 hit kill someone thats not wearing armor while you're a master of swords and having a good sword, only that occasion is fair. Other than that you might sneeze or your cat might jump on your mouse or you might hyper-lag or something and then you find yourself dead, you'll tell me it's just game, you will respawn and play again, well ye I agree, I would play a game with one hit kills personally, but others wouldnt.

I'm with slash on this. 1 hit kill, thought it appeals to me (rogue capitalising on stealth and what not), is a bit dodgy to have in an MMO.

Ok, but i think it is acceptable if exacting conditions are met, such as an arrow to the eye for example. I'm not saying that if you've only just learned how to handle a blade and you strike someone ineffectually in the chest they should die, but if you put all your not unconsiderable force into a blow to an unguarded head or midriff its more then a little immersion breaking when your opponent just shrugs it off.

Don't forget that you might see that you hit the eye of your opponent in your screen but in his screen you might hit far to the right of his head or even miss.
You can't have such detail in multiplayer games.

Maybe a 1 hit kill with a dagger while crouched attacking someone from behind who isn't in combat mode. An arrow to the unguarded head. A battleaxe to the unguarded head. IE most anything of a higher quality to an unguarded head. Seems fair, seeing as how someone wearing rags should probably be able to outrun most heavily armored warriors.

Personally I dont see why a sneaky hit deals more dmg than a regular hit.
I never understood it in other games either, Skyrim bigger example you could take down whole dragons with one sneaky arrow... d'oh

hahaha! agreed. A sneaky hit deals more damage if say they slit ur throat. In specific circumstances as the ones Ralph mentioned I guess it may sound a bit more reasonable.
But that would mean we'd have harvesters running around with helmets on their heads for fear of an aimed shot hehe :P
Still, mixed feelings on this
