This would be awesome, different categories of pets possible for each specialized magic path, possible elemental servant types or such.....

*cough cough* necromancy *cough weeze* and actually this was what I had in mind when I posted the thread, elimentals, familiars, zombies, commanded animals (oblivion/skyrim :P), magic slaves, golems. I believe pyros would have fun being able to command a floating ball of fire (wil-o-wisp I believe they are called), necromancers of course is obvious, Life magi could have the ability to mix animals and make magical creatures (tiger-birds, gryphins, wolves the size of horsers anyone?), earth guys can make stone golems, ect.
When all else fails to solve a problem, use legions of undead. When legions of undead are the problem, sit back and watch how many people die before it ends.

Would a pet not also mark you as a mage unless the priests also have them. One possible set of events for example. A mage has an undead companion with him and with out thinking strolls into town. The pet would of course draw attention to it's self and it's master. How would the town react? Is there a mage hunter in town? Perhaps the guard gets involved. This could end on several ways from the mage trying to convince the town he is a priest, to being ignored (odd as mages are hated and hunted), run out of town by an angery mob, or even hunted by the hunter. Now a more common pet like a common woodland animal would not draw such attention but can also lead a hunter to the mage or perhaps have him watched. This is just to name a few so care should be taked with consern for mage pets causing unwanted attention or perhaps have some that scream "I'm a mage" by their very existance. Can the pets be hidden, ordered to stay on one place, dismissed and called easily or with great dificuilty? Is the pet a "tank/guardian" that can buy a mage time to escape if needed as well as taking care of weaker intrusions? Is there a limit to how many pets a mage/priest can have? Just a few of the points that should be considered if pets are added.

well I am not good with balancing but I think that you should be able to tell you pet to stay in a certain place and with magic tell them to come to you, some pets may be able to hide or become camouflaged and some most definetly will not, but that is probably for the best. As for the amount of pets one could have, I dont know. I personally would love to be able to field armies of undead, but I doubt I would be able to. Priests esscentialy do their own form of magic through their god so they should be able to as well. Decoration for pets should be available so mabey a priest's golem would have some gold inlaid into it or something.

Seconded for the Army's! And the decorations! And all the rest!

. Also as "our pets" will in many cases be independent entities, treating our commands as suggestions rather then such at least until we earn or take their unswerving obedience (and even then, with limits in some cases, such as refusing to kill civilians or striking a woman in the more honorable followers, and indeed not doing so in less so cases) would be an idea. I can see the wolf pup I'm caring for straining while i tell him to calm down when he sees an enemy already, much like my hatchling who happens to be accompanying me (come on, even if you don't give us flight we still want dragons and extended jumps
)

Trust me, if we get necromancy and dragons plus the ability to form armies I will make they sky rain fire and destroy a kingdom with that army, that I swear. Though mabey we shouldnt be able to ride dragons but we should be able to use them to fight, and who doesnt want a giant golem in a siege. Those sieges shall go down in lore. I can see it now. They shall know no hope as they look upon the black army, their allies run in fear, their supplies cut, their walls useless, and even the comfort of the grave shall not come.

As far as "pets" or summoned creatures go, I think there should be a chance of losing control of them and having them attack their "trainer/tamer". If the trainer/tamer dies, it should be free to attack anyone close.
